Ph.D Degree Requirements

Admission Requirements

      
Continuation beyond the Master's degree or admission as a Ph.D. student requires completion of at least 18 hours of graduate course work past the BSEE degree or an MSEE degree.  In approving a request to continue beyond the Master's degree, the following will be taken into consideration:
     Undergraduate GPA (based on the last 60 hours of work)
     GRE:  Verbal: 
 500       Quantitative: 
 750         TOEFL:  550 (220 on new scale)

Ph.D. Degree Requirements

1.   A minimum of Eighteen (18) hours of course work in Electrical Engineering beyond the MSEE degree and 18 hours (cumulative) of dissertation.

2.   Candidates for the Ph.D. degree whose native language is not English must have a minimum score of 40 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE).  Certification for graduation may be obtained via remedial work if the minimum is not met.  The TSE must be attempted prior to the end of the second semester, and the requirement should be satisfied prior to filing the Final Program of Work.

3.  Courses listed by another department as “Not Applicable” to their Ph.D. program may not be used on an EE Ph.D. degree plan.

4.  Only one of the following pairs of courses may be included on the degree plan:  EE 5311/CSE 5350, EE 5313/CSE 5442, EE  5351/CSE 5366, EE 5356/CSE 6366, EE 5360/CSE 5344, EE 5349/CSE 5345.  (Select one of the two, not both.)

5.  The student must take and pass the departmental Diagnostic Examination within the first year of enrollment as a Ph.D. student.  Once this examination has been passed, the student is eligible to enroll in dissertation if the student is not on probation.

6.  The Supervising Committee will consist of five UTA Graduate Faculty, one of whom must be outside the EE Department.

7.  The student must take and pass an oral Comprehensive Examination (proposal for dissertation research) administered by the Supervising Committee.  After passing this examination, the student is eligible for admission to candidacy.  The Application for Candidacy and Final Program of Work must be filed and approved by the Graduate School at least one semester prior to the awarding of the degree.

8.  The student must orally defend the dissertation before the Supervising Committee.

9.  The EE course work GPA must be 3.0 or greater.  The overall GPA must be 3.0 or greater.
