Dr. Mo-Shing Chen Receives Emeritus Status

Electrical Engineering professor Dr. Mo-Shing Chen was named “Professor Emeritus” in recognition of his service to The University of Texas at Arlington.

Dr. Mo-Shing Chen, professor of electrical engineering and founder and director of the Energy Systems Research Center, retired in August of 2003 after 42 years of service. Over the years, he became known for his expertise in the modeling and analysis of electric power systems, power system planning, energy conservation, and other areas dealing with electric power generation and distribution. A Fellow of the Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Dr. Chen received numerous awards and accolades for his accomplishments, including UTA’s Outstanding Research Award in 1975, the Edison Electric Institute’s first Power Engineering Educator Award in 1976, UTA’s Distinguished Honorary Alumnus Award in 1979 and the IEEE’s prestigious Centennial Medal Award in 1984.

In addition to his teaching and research work, Dr. Chen was a frequent consultant to local and regional power providers in Texas, plus Consolidated Edison of New York, Independent System Operators of California, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the Federal Power Commission of Mexico, the Electric Power Commission of South Africa, and the Taiwan Power Company. His short courses on power generation and distribution attracted engineers and technicians from around the world to UTA.
